Ohio Fishing License Requirements: Costs, Rules, and Where to Buy

March 19, 2026

Who Needs an Ohio Fishing License?

Anyone age 16 or older must carry a valid Ohio fishing license while fishing in Ohio’s public waters. Children under 16 can fish without a license, making Ohio a great state for introducing kids to the sport. Licenses are required whether you’re fishing from shore, wading a creek, or casting from a boat.

License Types and Costs

The most common license is the Annual Resident Fishing License at $25. Non-residents pay $50 for an annual license. Ohio also offers:

A Lake Erie Permit is required in addition to your fishing license when fishing Lake Erie or its tributaries up to the first dam. This costs $11 for residents and $14 for non-residents.

The Fishing Year

Ohio’s fishing license year runs March 1 through the last day of February. If you buy a license in January, it expires at the end of February — not in a calendar year. Plan your purchase accordingly, especially for early spring fishing.

Where to Buy

Licenses are available online through the ODNR website, at any Ohio Walmart sporting goods counter, bait shops, sporting goods stores, and most marinas. The online system issues a printable or digital license immediately.

Free Fishing Days 2026

Ohio offers free fishing days on June 20-21, 2026, when anyone can fish Ohio waters without a license. All other regulations — size limits, bag limits, and season dates — still apply. It’s an excellent opportunity to try fishing before committing to a license.

Penalties

Fishing without a valid license can result in fines up to $150 plus court costs. Game wardens actively check licenses, especially at popular spots during peak season. Always carry your license or have digital proof available.
